great idea Steve, never thought of that. That would work especially well on any SPID with a plastic cover on it.
I would try that or perhaps a very tightly wrapped soft/thin towel around your fingertip that has been dipped in paint thinner - then blotted almost dry - then try to carefully rub the paint off.
Whatever you try, recommend start in the lower left corner of the SPID first. That is where the least info usually is, so if you goon it up, you haven't lost any info. SPIDs are usually arranged so that there are roughly the same number of entries on left and right sides - but the lower right corner is where an order no was placed if there was one, so that's why I'd start on the left.
Also, you can look under your seat to see if there is a build sheet stuffed between springs and burlap - it will have all the SPID info as well (might provide a little piece of mind before you take a sandblaster to the glovebox door
