Talking to a friend that worked for GM parts for 40+ years was telling me that he believes the majority of the 396 short blocks were basically the same other than the cams and heads..This conversation came about when I cracked a head on my 396 and was trying to find a replacement. The casting number was coming up as an open chamber 427 truck head. Engine was still factory stock with about 160k on it. I gave up and opted to replace with a 454.
