Re: Tell me about this LS engine???
That would be an LQ9, which is basically an LQ4 with flat-top pistons so it becomes a high-output engine making 345 HP stock. I have one out of a 2004 and I was pleased to find it for that reason. 400,000 miles is a lot, but not a big deal if you bore it out and do a complete rebuild. I don't know the history of the engine, but I wouldn't swap it without tearing into it to at least determine its condition. If you have an opportunity to drive it, I would. If you don't want to or can't get into the internals, you can check compression, pull valve covers, pull spark plugs and manifolds (to look at pistons/cylinders) to get a little more insight as to its condition.
Besides that, this vintage of LS is the best for parts and customization. The computers are easy to tune, parts are cheap, and iron blocks are tough.
I would disagree with GIZZ though on the 4L60 part though. You can certainly build one up to be tougher, but a reman 4L80 or even 4L65 would still be better in my opinion.
