I'd leave them off, too, for the same reason, and... Painting them defeats their purpose. Ok, so you chip the guard instead of the door. But you'll look at them and know they are supposed to be bright stainless. It's a vehicle you want clean and smooth, so why go sticking things on it? I'd say the same about vent visors. If you don't want them to stand out, don't put them on.
