The compressor in my '86 is getting a bit loud and I've got to figure out what to do about it. If I need a new compressor, I'll definitely do the conversion.
I did have a 1991 Ford Escort GT for a few years that I used as my sacrifice to the road salt gods. I had it converted to R134a. I seem to remeber the total cost was about $400. A new orifice tube was required. It cooled plenty well, although I had to have some seals replaced a time or two. But, that was poor Ford design, not an R134a problem.
