Most horrible noise in my engine

I think my luck may have run out. I was running my truck this weekend pretty hard. Everything seemed fine until about 4800rpm, just before shifting. The engine pops once or twice, then emits the most horrible high pitched squeal. I'm pretty sure it's a metal on metal sound. The belts are tight, and she holds steady oil pressure at around 40psi. It seems to run fine otherwise. a friend of mine thinks the popping noise could be a bad plug, bad wire, or distributor, but he's never heard a squealing noise like that. Anyone got any ideas?
