I could be wrong but I remember an old newsreel from the war years where the visors were an attempt to shield the lights from enemy planes. Never seemed too effective to me..
I never cared for the look. They seem to gravitate to the low rider crowd where anything chrome or polished is used.
The visors look like a circumcision gone bad.
