If you have to drill them, try to get as close to center as possible. Try starting small and step drill up to the tap size bit. The tap may clean the old material out. And not mess up the original threads. Or once you get a hole through, it may relieve some of the pressure from the threads. Allowing you to remove it with an easy out. Good luck.
