You cannot stop the grinding in granny gear, There is no synchronizer in that model trans. You can double clutch to shift into 1st. at a slow speed.
Try what Richard said about the emergency brake or hold the brakes on with the pedal.
If it does not kill the engine when you let the clutch in neutral out you are ok.
The first thing you should do when you get one of these trucks is check &/or replace all the fluids.
