any year will work, if you want ALMOST 3" wider per side a regular 4x4 axle will work. 2wd is ~54", 4x4 is ~59". there is a Zr2 that is wider still ~63, but may look too wide if you dont have big spacers on the front. 98+ are disc brake if you care about that, its not a huge difference in braking though. all will bolt right up to your leafs.

make sure you check rear gearing ratio via the rpo codes in the donor glvebox, most 4x4 were 3.73 (GT4) but if your 88 was a series 1 case I think the highest was 3.08. mot a big deal with an overdrive trans, but if you have a TH350 or other non overdrive it might make sense just to stay with spacers.
