I cut the u bolts and rolled the old axle out from under the truck and left the factory springs. I used tall jack stands in front of the axle to support the frame. I rolled the new axle under and welded the spring perches on once the axle was centered. I also used a digital angle gauge to make sure the pinion angles matched.
Pirate4x4.com has a 14 bolt bible that has all kinds of info. Cab and chassis axles are the narrowest, single rear wheel like I used are a little wider and dually pick up axles are the widest.
