Re: Best price on GM crate engines?
You may have purchased already, I know the post is a few weeks old.
Be careful with the GM crate engines. I bought one a few years ago, it was the 290hp version of the GMPP 350 long block. It was ~ok~ on power, sounded descent etc. I put it in a 69 Camaro. Did the proper break in procedures, I've done a thousand times.
About 500 miles in, it developed a heavy white smoke out of the pass side exhaust. Startup only at first but it got progressively worse. I started to investigate a little more and found every valve seal on that side was chewed up pretty bad. As it turned out, that head had valve seals for a 4.3v6. It was an error in the build process, yes.. but Summit / GMPP wouldnt warranty it. The warranty they advertise with these engines only applies if it was installed by an ASE Certified master mechanic. Well.. I'm not. But I can build a small block in my sleep.
Doesnt matter. I'll never buy another one. My suggestion would be to go with a local builder or Jasper, etc. The GM Crates are ok I probably just got a bad one. It happens I get it.. but the warranty side of things gave me a bit of a bad taste in the future. Hope this helps.
