Yeah right, that's a good one. Reminds me of the other day, where I learned the 1972 rearview mirror is on the headboard and the 71 mirror on the windshield

At least on a BBC, the rear LH side has a part number & date stamp, and on the front RH side something like.......T0426TKB. T stands for Tonawanda plant, and 0426 is for April 26th. The TKB suffix code means 71-72 truck L47, with a 400 transmission.
The intake is stamped and dated too, heads are stamped under the valve covers. With some rational and a little search it gives a guy a solid idea whether or not the block is original, though you need to know the build date as Customcamper said to know for 99%ish sure.
In other terms.........the blocks in our old trucks are "numbers matching", it just doesn't include a VIN.
