Heat comes from resistance, usually...

A poor connection from the wires to the switch, through the connection or the terminals. Worn switch causing poor connections internally. Problem could be elsewhere in the circuit as well, allowing added current through the switch.

I have seen these common problems with older vehicles as rust and corrosion attacks electrical systems. A little resistance at every terminal adds up.

Maybe amp draw testing or voltage drop testing could help pinpoint where the problem is.
