According to what I see there an 836--- casting number is gong to be a mid 30's engine.
I have to believe the guy is trying to sell you a bill of goods. or bought something on someone else's claim and is now trying to sell it as what he bought it for.

According to this from Rock Auto an original 57 235 distributor should have a number that starts with 111 and is 7 digits long.

Now the hard ball question. Are these numbers you have seen with your own eyes or are these numbers that the seller is giving you with or without photos of the numbers?
