The carriers have a different off set that move the ring gear farther from, or closer to, the centerline of the pinion gear. That is because the pinion gear changes size. They call them series because a group of ring gears will fit a series 3 carrier and another group of ring gears will fit a series 4 carrier. Some one will correct me if I'm wrong but I think 3.42 is the cut off for the series 3 carrier. Anything above that and you need to go to a series 4 carrier.
