Question a new heater core = huge heat but it didnt fit well - why?

Hey all. I changed the heater core in my red 67 today & the core I got from the parts place was 1/4" thinner than factory. The instructions for the new one said that you may have to use foam &/or adjust the brackets & they also say that the 2" core is more efficient that the 2 1/4" old one. I used two pieces of blue house insulation foam to shim it up. It throws MEGA heat now. I've seen this post here before but I cant find it now via the search method. What did you all do to solve this problem? Could a guy get his old heater core recored OR are proper brackets availible for the 2" core?
