The rubber is also underneath the mirror and the mirror is glued or heat bonded to it. I have never been able to remove the original mirrors without breaking the glass but I can almost always save the rubber base. It takes quite a while because you have to chip the broken glass off of the rubber with a sharp putty knife or a small chisel.......
I tried some solvent but that didn't work. I have never tried heat. I have a few extra mirrors so I guess I could try it.
