It looks to be just a hose coming out of an EGR hole. Since it appears the EGR is hooked up (driver's side front valve cover to carb base), I'd yank the hose and put a breather in there.

EGR=exhaust gas recirculation and it comes from the exhaust manifolds NOT THE VALVECOVER
