I have been told that they are to let on coming traffic know that a wider vehicle is headed towards them at night...the 3 center ones are supposed to catch your eye, and then when closer, the outer ones are to help you get a visual on the trucks exact location in the lane. That is why it has pretty much always been required on any pick up with daul rear tires and anything bigger than a regular pick up.
Again, this is just what I have been told.
On a smaller truck, it is just for looks.
