He just used shorter bolts that only ran through the bottom section of the bed crossmember, not from the top all the way through. Then you don't have to have expert precision on where you drill the hole in the wood.

I did the same as CW. I tacked the head of the bolts in place on the crossmember and then recessed the bottom of the board to allow room for the head of the bolt. It gives a cleaner look.
