I put the shields back on my 76.
It's up to you, but I liked the fact that I had a little more armor on the tanks.
They didn't rot out in 40 years with them in place. If you're worried about it spray the tank with cavity and frame wax before assembling the shields to the tank.
I needed the electric fuel pump tanks from the 1987-91 TBI trucks for my 1987 6.5L diesel that didn't have provision for a mechanical fuel pump otherwise she would still have the 1976 tanks in place.
