There's a couple threads, and a rather thorough one where it's discouraged.
One is a VIN matter, but depending your State you live in, it may not matter.
The other reason is the shape of the 73+ frames. I guess they bump up under the cab so it makes the whole truck sit higher on the frame. Probably look fine for a 4x4.

It's been said that the 73+ suburbans don't have this bump up and our trucks could potentially sit correctly, but I don't know if anyone has ever confirmed.
