Why not get a couple bicycle cables and run then through the door end up into the fender and have them come out right by the fire wall by the hood hinge. If your battery is dead then you can grab the cable and release the door.
Yeah yeah hood release. on the 79 I had the cable brake and I just took the grill out. I looked at this on my 88 that to get the grill out you have to lift he hood. It looks like you can release the hood with a screw driver.
another option is a way to power the truck without lifting the hood. A lot of 4x4 folks put a fork lift battery conector up in the grill. They use those to plug in Winch or jumper cables. That would let you get power to the truck without opening anything . Just hide it behind the bumper. Most 4x4 shops have those in stock its that common.
