Here is a primer on the crankcase ventilation system. If the system has leaks from bad seals and/or a defective PVC valve it can cause several problems including old leaks. The system is pretty simple and the cost to repair it is low.

Basically low pressure is created in one valve cover so air flows from the breather on the other valve cover into the intake manifold through the PVC valve.
