At this point, you could use the mounting bolts to hold a painted reinforcement in place without welding, maybe even on the inside to hide it.

Thanks, that is a good idea. Since the build thread is so far behind the actual build, I can tell you I ended up just using the OE pivot (from the donor car) with a new adjustable length rod and peddle.

The left side has caught up to the right. I remembered thinking the arm rests look good without the ashtrays.
