I hear you. I worked part-time in a service station when I was 15 (mid 1960s). Learned about oil & filter changes, lube jobs, fixed flat tires etc etc. Still do my own minor maintenance, partly because I can, & partly because I'm too cheap to pay the going rate.
I remember gas under 30 cents, and we fixed flats for a dollar -- same rate as my hourly wage.
