Changed over to a metal filter and decided to give those spring clamps one more try, now I know why I hate them.
Using conventional pliers I managed to launch a clamp across the garage and into another dimension, fortunately I had spares.
Anyway it's not leaking so I consider the whole experience a step in the right direction.
