Every time I pull my fish house across the lake I select 1st gear on the column. It also comes in handy when you have a long stretch of muddy logging road to get down. Maybe it is different with the 700's lower first gear but I can see a use for 1st.
When the snow is really deep I put it in 4-low AND select 1st on the column.

The snow plow guys use 1st alot too.
