Easy. Ground clearance. I drive "off road" almost daily, and spend lots of time on what I call roads, but the SUV manufacturers would call "rough conditions, not covered by warranty". "Big" tires often prevent undercarriage damage, and mean the difference between going forward and backing out.

You'd be surprised where an experienced off-road driver (farmer, rancher, etc) takes his 2WD. Many times, 4WD just means a bigger tractor/wrecker to pull you out...

Besides, there are cheaper ways to fill up our big ol' wheelwells than 20" rims...
