I'd get a solid state/heavy duty flasher while you're at it, they aren't dependent on current flow. A normal flasher will flash too fast with a trailer connected for the same reason Necromancer speaks of...current flow (more lights, more current, less lights less current) The HD flashers tend to 'click' louder than the normal ones too.
I use the adapter that Grim Reaper speaks of on my '87. I pop it in when I need it, otherwise it lives in the glove box. (Stays nice and clean that way!)
