I'd spray, wipe it over to make sure everything has a good cover and then re-apply once a month maybe to make sure. The other alternative would be to get some rustproofing wax, we have a brand called "Waxoyl" here in the UK and spray a good coat of that on, it sprays on and then thickens to a waxy coating, come spring warm it gently and clean off with some turps or similar solvent. Better than WD40 as it's much thicker and you can see where it is and so make sure there's no gaps. Here you can buy it in a bulk pack or in rattle cans, one or two rattle cans would do all your chrome. I did the backs of my metal door panels with it when I re-upholstered them and will get around to doing the whole of the truck, box sections, inside of doors and rockers etc eventually.
