I'd make sure I had a class 4 trailer hitch, the ball will have to match your trailer.
As was said a trailer brake is the only way to go. Both on the trailer and in the truck. The reason I say that is I have seen people "say" they have a trailer brake with no brakes on the trailer (I have this friend from Louisiana...Just sayin
).
