Re: What do you like about the State you live in. Done with Ca

Right there with you thinking about the move. We will start looking for a place to live our remaining days when my MIL living with us is sadly gone. Both my wife and I born and raised here, hate to leave but we have been left no choice. Costs for everything are outrageous and there are plans just to raise them more every year. Looked into solar to reduce electricity costs and even that has been rendered useless to lower costs by our governor. Seriously. why would I buy an electric car here with the extreme costs? I do have some hope that this electric revolution will meet its demise in the near future, just as it has done several times in the past. I see reality setting in again. Hoping something will change so we can stay.

Indiana isn’t perfect, but there are plenty of positives. Reasonable housing (250K buys a nice home), friendly people and low crime (l leave my keys in my vehicle most of the time). Climate isn’t too bad, we do have some chilly days and humidity, but decent overall.
I love to visit CA, but couldn’t live there

Re: What do you like about the State you live in. Done with Ca

I feel for you Cal folks. It's like that Eagles song Paradise. Soft on crime policies, overregulation and taxation are ruining the West.

I am a Texan, from Harlingen to Big D, but I left behind the crime, humidity, 8 lanes of trafic, square miles of concrete, bugs, racial problems, and incredible food, for the wide open spaces of the West.

My dad was in the USAF so I have lived in many places and spent my summers in Boulder CO. I came to central OR for a working vacation and was amazed by how much better it was than Boulder.

Its not the state I like it's the area. The state politics are following CA closely. The EAST side of the Cascades is mostly public land. It's nice to know mentaly nobody lives there. You can use it and not pay taxes on it.

I have the river and 32000 acres out my back door that I pay no taxes on.
Depending on the elevation, one can have winters with little to no snow to many feet on the ground all winter. Sage brush sea, dunes, to dry forest, to wet forest.

You walk out the front door in the AM and its 50 deg, crisp and clean in mid summer. I have no AC. Just cool down the place at night. Wildlife can be a pain. The deer eat everything, the wolves are moving in, elk are mean, and I dont want to meet a mountain lion. We have two seasons, winter and fire.

I dont go to Bend anymore unless I have to. It has grown to big.

Re: What do you like about the State you live in. Done with Ca

I like the wide open space, lack of human population, and diverse terrain of NM. It’s a pretty place with freaking amazing food. But unfortunately our governor is just as looney as newsome, and I’m afraid that before long we will be in as bad of shape as CA. The area I currently live in is the among the most conservative in the state so our taxes and such are quite reasonable. I enjoy the cultural diversity as well. Always cool things to see and do. I’m moving the Albuquerque suburbs this summer so my opinions are likely to change lol. I too have been fortunate to have good jobs and the new one is no exception. Gonna put that extra cash away so I can get the hell out if I need to down the road.

If the Greater Idaho thing happens, the state line will be in my backyard and I will never have to move. I have been following #1 Cody WY and #2 Cloadcroft NM if it gets too bad.

Re: What do you like about the State you live in. Done with Ca

We vacationed for over 30 years on Kauai staying north of Kappa about 5-6 miles. Typically 2 weeks. Last trip was Feb 2020. The trouble with HI is that the cost of lodging has gone crazy the last few years. Rental cars are not far behind.
The beach cottage we stayed at for over the last 10 years was all in about $275 per night. Now its $600 plus.
I bet any decent house not anywhere near the beach is $750K?
Again a great place hang out for a couple of weeks in Feb.

When we did the motor home stretch several years ago, we would take a trip thru Tenn- NC -SC- and end up in the panhandle of FL.
We liked every place in the Carolinas except Charleston. Scariest drivers I have ever seen. But the houses downtown were beautiful.

BEAUTIFUL......Wow, so nice. You can go to Ca. to meet a mt. lion. Tragic what happened to the brothers recently. I'd rather meet a bear. Come to think of it, I met eyes with a mother as near as the desktop I'm using. She was behind a bush, then stood up. She wasn't impressed with me, and then I walked my elderly mother back to the car "why are we walking back to the car" X4. Her cub was in the apple tree 15 ft. from us. "Domesticated", South Tahoe. Afterwards they played on the lawn, we went around back.

I LOVE Oregon. Keep those pictures up I'm movin'☺ Always thought the people of Grants Pass were cool, they still think it's the 60s-70s, right on. I've taken the Ca. and Oregon coastlines with and RV. Oregon three times, and desire another trailer to get there some more. As for the south, once is enough, it just wasn't that nice. I did like Jalama Beach, but the bathrooms weren't maintained, and half the showers were open to take your money, but didn't work. Ca. Govt. run, what else is new.

Incidentally, Ca. has the highest unemployment rate in the country. Why would that be? Perhaps rhetorical.

Yep, and there's East Lake too! We used to snowmobile up to the top of Paulina Peak, and on the obsidian flow, it was so fun!

Re: What do you like about the State you live in. Done with Ca

I grew up in Alameda CA. 30 years and I left to Florida. The summers are brutally hot but then it rains and it's brutally humid. I just bought a third of an acre on an inlet of river that goes out to the bay for 180k. Building a house pool and dock. I live 7 minutes from the water plant I work at. I don't get downtown S.F. food but I know how to make it. There are beaches within 10 minutes and all over when your boating. Even Islands you can spend the day on. I go diving down at Key west once or twice a year and the cruise ships leave from 20 minutes away. Cozumel once or twice a year. Goods and bads everywhere you go though. I traded earthquakes for hurricanes. No smog laws here yet.

I've not been to every state in the nation but I have been to many and have found this to be true. Also, once you get a certain distance from the larger urban areas the people become very similar as well.

I spent a month in upstate New York back in 2008. Gorgeous up there and I made a buddy I called my Yankee redneck brother. Being from the south, he and I had a very different inflection to our voices, naturally, but for the most part we had similar likes and mannerisms.

The small town I live in is pretty nice and have been here over 12 years now. I live just north of town in a small neighborhood with great neighbors. I often go to town and leave my shop wide open and doors unlocked. I have at least three neighbors that watch my place as close as I watch theirs.
