I tried the “take it to a mechanic” trick. 4 mechanics said they won’t work on anything pre-2000. The one that I towed it to couldn’t figure it out and told me to come get it.

Do this and report back if any codes show up. You can verify fuel pressure with the schrader port up at the fuel rail. Harbor freight sells a gauge that should get you by in this case.

Do not use a conventional test light to test for the firing pulses at the injectors. To test the firing pulses at the injectors, a noid light is a must. Here is an eBay link to a noid light.
