Buck thirty five an hour
My sister in law was going through her journal today and was sending us texts. In 1970 she got a job at the town library for 1.35 an hour with the promise of a raise to 1.50 if she stayed for a year. I think it was her first real job as a kid instead of picking berries.
I looked it up and it has the same purchasing power of about $11.00 an hour in 2024. So what can you get say fast food wise with 11 bucks today and what could you get for 1.35 in 1970? Is it a huge difference?

Re: Buck thirty five an hour
Went to McDonalds here a few weeks ago. Used gift cards given to me. 3 double mini burgers and two fries and no drinks, almost $25. Have $15 left on the cards. When that is used up I will never buy anything from them again. Surprisingly, at In & Out a double double, fries and a drink can still be had for that $11.

Re: Buck thirty five an hour
At first I was thinking what the heck can you do with $1.35 even back then. I looked at some old menus thinking that $1.35 would be similar to the adjusted for inflation $11.00, but it’s not even close. You got more for the $1.35 and not just at McDonalds. Course todays minimum wage is closer to $20.00, but in the end it looks like overall cost of goods has really outpaced inflation.

Re: Buck thirty five an hour
I remember once minimum wage was $ 1.90 - $ 1.95 an hour. My boss was paying me $ 2.10 an hour, I thought I was RICH!
