I thought I read that you needed this experience the way your going at this looks like you are getting what you asked for ...I wouldn't think of rebuilding a auto trans but now you got me starting to turn your way I have a motor and trans in waiting ...for rebuilding but need to finish my current build ...great progress on your project

Trust me, I'm tearing it down and replacing whatever is in the kit but I have a very rudimentary understanding of what the hades is going on in this thing! And I am getting experience! If all goes well I have another one to do for my Pontiac.

I do have a book! But I'm also taking lots of notes which means I'm going slower than a real mechanic would.

I like trying to rebuild things. I was going to rebuild the waterpump but the kit cost more than a new one.

Took the case to the carwash and sprayed the crap out of it. Looks pretty clean and feels good to the touch.

Re: Previous owner '68

Found a worn bearing surface on the output shaft ring gear. Not sure if a tranny guy would go ahead and use it, but I have another one coming in. Every thing else is looking good so far.

Re: Previous owner '68

Awesome posts! Never opened one up before and like yourself have a very basic understanding of how it all works. One of these days I'll tear open a TH350 and do this same thing.

I would've replaced that part as well. Might as well while you have it blown apart. Looking forward to seeing it go back together.

If you find one cheap enuff, or even free is better, then I would go for it. There are a couple of tools that help, I'll try to take a picture of them.

The book I have has a few weak areas, but I am also checking the web as I go. Here's a pretty good thread I found. https://nastyz28.com/threads/first-t...-wrong.325954/

Re: Previous owner '68

Tools I have been using.

The one to the right is to help guide in seals.

The one in the middle is a slide hammer I modified to help pull the pump. Just welded a bolt that fit the tapped holes in the pump to a nut that fit the slide hammer.

Last one is a clutch spring compresser. It looks odd but works well.

On your engine mounts, I would be concerned with the small surface area of the spacer transferring the weight of the engine to the frame. Not sure if it would be a problem or not. I just cut some flat bar stock the length of the mount, 1/2" thick, and drilled the corresponding holes.

You have a point there, I like the idea of a block better! More surface area to spread the load.

Thanks, Rg

I've always admired and respected good transmission techs. There is a lot going on inside of an auto, no matter the vintage. It doesn't take much to mess them up!

Great work thus far.

Oh great!!! Just kidding! I'm doing my best, waiting on parts to replace worn parts is slowing me down.

I actually realized that the pump unit on these is also acting as a rotary coupling. I used to mess around with Fibro table rotary couplings when I was still going to work everyday. So I do know a little bit about how they work!

Re: Previous owner '68

Installed it on the output shaft and put the shaft in the housing. Then I loaded in the low/reverse clutch pack. Pretty easy, start with a steel and alternate with friction. Soak frictions in ATF for 5 minutes before install.

Re: Previous owner '68

Then I grabbed the anti-clunk spring to put it in and I dropped it and this happened. What tha??? Don't really understand it, it's very hard and must have had a defect, so at least it broke now and not while in service.

Once again waiting on parts...

Re: Previous owner '68

Now, I hate to even bring this up but I found this thing in the area I'm working on the transmission and I THINK it might go in the tail housing at the end of the driven speedo gear??? It fit there well but is this right??? Do I even need it???

Without it there is quite a bit of side to side play on the driven gear but with in it tightens it up nicely. Is it typical for the driven gears to have side to side play?

Working on transmissions is fun!
