Starter studs were probably 3/8 or 5/16. but someone here will know. Later model ACDelco starters could be 5/16 or even metric, like 8mm.

Decide where you want to put the battery ground wire before specifying a length. I like to use one of the front bolt holes on the passenger side of the timing cover -- ones that were used for front motor mounts. They are 3/8.

Also, be sure the frame and body are grounded to the block. External star washers can help make a better connection.

Finally, a little longer is always better than having tension on the cable. You will want the starter cable to be routed and clamped somewhere at least a couple inches away form exhaust components.
