Help with Block Numbers
I have what I believe to be a 62-64 327 block but having a hard time confirming it. The block has the following casting number on the bellhousing, 3782870 and FI029S on the head pad. Can someone help me out in deciphering the numbers, thanks!

Re: Help with Block Numbers
F = Flint
1029 = Oct 29 S = engine code.. could be 327 or 283, depending on Year of production.. Locate the casting date code on the engine for year of production.. http://camaros.org/pdf/LimeBook.pdf |

If you don’t want to scroll down 110 pages then the
Suffix code S is found here. https://nastyz28.com/gm-chevy-codes/...s-suffix-6.php |

Re: Help with Block Numbers
3782870 casting number is for a 327. Also if you have some calipers you can measure the bore as a 283 has a smaller bore than a 327. 283 is 3.875 inch standard bore, 327 is a 4" bore. For a 283 to get to a 4" bore it would need to be bored .125 over, so its a somewhat sure way to check as well.

Looks like J283, which im decoding as October 28, 1963. But then the suffix code from the cylinder head pad being just an "S" is saying 1962 327

Re: Help with Block Numbers
There is no confusion, it's very explicit.. It even explains that "I" in the stamping is a "1"... Your engine stamping decodes to October 29th, which tallies with the casting date the day before.. According to the lime book, "S" could be either 327 or 283, depending on the year of production (casting date code).. The "S" is used for several years.. Go back and look at the Lime Book again.. What is the engine having the "S" designation for 1963.. That's your engine..

I used the chart on Nasty Z28 which indicated the only "S" designation was for a 1962 327, hence my confusion....thanks for explaining it to me like I'm 5.....

Re: Help with Block Numbers
Sounds like its been figured out between the combination of casting number, Suffix code and casting dates but wanted to include a snippet from the Lime Book;
its a 1963 250hp, 327 from a passenger car that probably was in a 1964 model year car since it was cast in late October 1963

Re: Help with Block Numbers
Why the snarky remark?? You said you were confused so I explained how you can figure it out for yourself.. I'm sorry, but I'm not one to spoon-feed information, especially when it involves searching through a mile long list of possibilities..
