Tailpipes aren't nessasary but they sure are nice. They reduce annoying reaonance and fumes in the cab and also just make the sound more pleasing to the ear. A crossover can be an H or an X with the H being easier and nearly as effective. If your not oppose to some fab work, I had great results using a kit with 90's, 45's, a couple long straight pieces and a couple u bends. They sell them at Summit, Speedway, etc and are mandrel bent with a stub on one end and a socket on the other. I used Walker "mega-clamps" to secure my mufflers and resonators to the pipes. I also put a mega clamp in the middle of my H pipe so as to be able to separate either side independently in the event I needed to remove one side.
