Re: Copy Original Pattern On Used Ring & Pinion Even If Not Ideal?

Hi PJ. Boy that's a lot of business, but you saved $1200 bucks.
The differential shop gave me a detailed break-in protocol -- several 20 mile runs, punctuated with 30 minute cool downs. Just running 3 miles to the supermarket and back won't do, they said.

I can see why they charge that much. It is a time-consuming job. I spent in the ballpark of $400 on axles, bearings, seals and shims. The gears were free, thanks to 72again4x4.

This is a great group, on this Board.
Guys give you free stuff. Just pay shipping.
Once, I sent some L6 Manifold hold down widgets to a guy in Central CA, and got stiffed on the shipping reimbursement, but I heard he got hit with medical issues, so I didn't get too bent out of shape. Other members have restored my Faith in Humanity.
It's all good.

I _should_ go out and work on my Stepside project instead of goofing off on the internet inside under the swamp cooler, but it's 106* and Sunny w/ a 3 knot wind gusting to 6.
Actually, that's perfect spraypaint weather.

Sounds challenging to keep your sweat from dripping on the paint

Re: Copy Original Pattern On Used Ring & Pinion Even If Not Ideal?

This thread was well-attended - I’m hoping for some knowledgeable recommendations on wear pattern for my 12 bolt.

In hindsight I should have put marking on it before disassembly but alas….

3.73’s / Eaton Truetrac, new Motive axles.

On install, I R&R’d the carrier a hundred times with the pinion depth scribed on the pinion, and just couldn’t get a pattern I liked with appropriate backlash.

I added a 0.010” pinion shim, which pushes the pinion toward the carrier.

I set backlash to its minimum (I honestly forget what it was, but I set it to the minimum spec expecting new parts would wear together and get me a little slop.

It turns out the diff whines on acceleration at about 40-55mph, no noise on deceleration, no slop or “clink” when I tap the gas. I think it’s too “tight” either in backlash or pinion depth. The wear pattern looks weird too on the pinion, like spotted?

Judging from what you see (and I can take more photos), what does your gut tell you? Thanks for any pro advice 😎
