When I was young and single I drove stupid high (120+ MPH) speeds with retreaded tires that had to have tubes in them. I'm no longer young, nor immortal, though I used to act that way back in the day. Lucky to be alive, 50 years later.

The outer lip holds the tire in place the part highlighted does the seal .

I appreciate you all's concern over my safety...thank you! Just ordered 2 new tires for the front...have an appointment tomorrow to get them installed. I've come to this decision because of your arguments and because I do drive this truck very enthusiastically...often.

The previous tires are 40 series whereas the new ones are going to be 45 series. This should give a little more padding between road and wheel, ease up on the (tire related) ride stiffness and fill in the fender gap just a tiny bit better. My calculations put the difference at 0.47 inches which means the tire will stretch further away from the center of the hub by less than 1/4 inch. Right now I'm thinking this will not cause any rubbing.

EDIT: I calculated that wrong. The total sidewall height increase will be ~1/2 inch all the way around changing tire height by ~1" overall. Hmmm
