Help! I need to change one of the springs in the steering column that cancels the left turn signal , it doesn't cancel , and was wondering what is the best way to take off the steering wheel and what else is involved in changing the spring? Thank you.

Re: how to take off steering wheel?
You will need a steering wheel puller. Plan on spending about 20 dollars to buy one, or get a lonaer from your local parts store.
Once the steering wheel is off, the springs are right there to change. No other removal required.

Re: how to take off steering wheel?
What do the springs look like? The reason I'm asking is that when I removed a automatic steering column, I found a spring on the floor. Are they hard to replace? Thanks

Re: how to take off steering wheel?
1. Remove horn cover
2. Remove nut in centre of wheel 3. Beat on backside of wheel until it lets go and breaks your nose 4. Proceed to hospital to get nose "reset" 5. Stop at parts store to buy a steering wheel puller on the way home for the next time, try not to get too embarrassed by the partsman laughing at you because of the obvious mishap. ahh if i could only be 16 again ![]() |

Re: how to take off steering wheel?
Well I have a couple ways i pull them.
1. I have an adaptor for my BA slide hammer to yank it off. Note watch out for back window!!! 2. This one requires a little more talent. Put your feet flat on the floor under the steering wheel so you can pust tward you with your knees. pull the horn button off. Pull the lock ring off. Unscrew the nut just about all the way till you have it level with the end of the steering shaft. Now take your bfh in your right hand pull the top of the steering wheel tward you with the left while pushing with your knees. Then smack the nut a few good times with the BFH and voila off come the steering wheel. Like i said this one requires a little talent and coordination. Again watchout for your nose!! Terry J.

Back on topic; buy the puller. You can use it for more than just steering wheels, and your face will be thankful! Don't even think about asking!!!!!!!!!!! LJ

Re: how to take off steering wheel?
I've done it a few times but dunno how to explain it -- once you're in there looking at them, it's easy to see how to replace them.

Re: how to take off steering wheel?
I think you can even "borrow" a steering wheel puller at Autozone but they aren't very expensive and worth every penny.
Make sure you park the truck with the wheels straight ahead and the wheel centered before you pull it off. It will make things a lot easier when you put it back on. I think this is the same one that Autozone and the O'Reilly group of stores sells. http://www.toolking.com/products/100...ooglebase=W150 It's also the same one I have in my tool box. Re: how to take off steering wheel?
They are a L/H and a R/H spring. They will not interchange.
