Can I use different coil springs to lower my front?
I have a 94 ext cab 2wd & want to lower the front about 2". I'm a newbie to spring ratings etc.. but I've been looking at the Moog Catalog curious if I could get a different "stock" spring to fit my truck and lower it. Below are a few I have found. CC650 & CC648 are stock recommendations for my truck. I narrowed down the same end types and Inside diameter then 2"-ish lower Install ht at a similar load and got 5044 & 578. First thing I notice is the spring rate is dramatically lower. Am I correct that the spring rate is X lbs to press the spring 1 inch? If so will these springs with a 350 lb spring rating be too soft and bouncy even at the same load rating? Would it be better to look for a 600-700 spring rate?

Good research and all, but seems like your money could be put to better use. If it were me I would either cut one coil off the stock spring or replace it with an aftermarket lowering spring.

best thing you can do is buy springs that have been designed and engineered for your specific application by a professional// cuts down on cost with a trial and error type selection

My thought was I could pull stock springs off another vehicle, not necessarily buy new. Also I want to learn about springs in the process, even if I just go buy drop springs.

Nothing wrong with research and free thinking. I support that 100%. From experience I can tell you that used springs are going to have sagged a bit, and there is no way of knowing how much till they are installed. Getting them off at a salvage yard has the potential to be a lesson in frustration as well.
Don't be afraid to cut a coil off your existing springs and see how it sets. As long as you don't use excessive heat, this will work just fine. When money permits you may want to go for dropped springs, or maybe keep the cut springs and buy spindles instead.
