Question blower resistor problem

I have a 1979 chevy k10, shortbed, 4x4, with 400 sbc and it's been a great truck for 40 years. All original with 51,00 miles on it. Decided to put in a new blower resistor. Truck heater fan always ran on low when you turned on the key, however with this new resistor when you turn key on the fan is running in high. Is it the wrong resistor? it looked correct. Can I run the truck by just disconnecting this at the blower?
Thanks
