Ideas for spare tire location

Over the years I used the OE under-bed carrier, and later just put the spare in the bed under a vinyl cover. Both the wheel and tire were old and nasty looking, so they were never stolen.

Now I have a nicer wheel and newer tire, so I'm looking for options to secure them in the bed. I have the under-bed carrier parts, but would hate to remove the spare while lying on my back next to a busy highway or in the rain. Show me what you guys and gals have been using for bed mounts.

I bought an in-bed tire carrier from LMC. I have the carrier under the truck, but like you, I'm disinclined to lay under the truck or even hunch down to get the spare out of there. Especially if I was towing the travel trailer. I've since sold that trailer and bought a motorhome, as mentioned in another thread. AAA is going to change a flat on that thing.

I use an original GM in-bed spare tire bracket bought years ago at a salvage yard. Had originally intended the under bed spare thing til a friend mentioned about the thrill he had one time of crawling under the truck in the mud and rain to gain access for spare to change a flat. Gave up that under bed thought real quick, mounted the spare left side up close to the D/S corner. Not in the way when turning to look thru the back glass. Seen later he had done the same spare tire mount.

Probably mentioned already, in-bed spare tire carrier, they're often sold on the parts board. There's a thread or two where to mount them.

I've thought about using a crank up type underbed carrier from a Toyota for example.

I was going to swap my factory underbed carrier to crank down one from a 92 C1500, Then I went and put a squarebody suburban gas tank in that location. I got an in-bed mount from LMC. IT is simple and works well and was pretty cheap. about the same as folks were trying to sell used factory ones. I mounted mine on the passenger side rear, because of where the filler neck is for the fuel tank.

LMC says the carrier is for wheels no wider than 7". The spare wheel I have is an 8" rally, but I could get by just fine with a 6" or 7" wheel. The tire I had planned to use is a 255-70x15, but a 235-75x15 is is virtually the same height as my truck's four 255-70s.

Just dug out my so-called "nicer" wheel and newer tire, and neither one is either of those! So, no loss if I don't use them, and maybe I can sell the 15x8 rally wheel at a swap meet or on Facebook Marketplace.

You'd just need a longer stud, but that's probably the most expensive part of the kit. I checked my spare. It is a 215/85R on a 16" Suburban wheel. There's about 1-1/2" of extra thread on the stud. It appears to be the same outside diameter as the 9.50-16.5 Transforce tires I have on the ground. I've never used the spare, so I don't even know if the tires on the ground can fit on that mount. Wish I had thought of that. If it doesn't fit later, I'll just weld on an extension to the stud.

Thinking the same thing. Cobble together a collar to use the same crank as the jack

I posted this several years ago. Still holding the spare just fine.

I'm not a big fan of the stock tire carrier. You could whip up something like I did on the cheap. I've got $20.00 something bucks invested in this. The winch came off a Mitsubishi truck. Some scrap metal, little welding, some bolts & nuts, and no more cussing the stock set-up! I set it up so the crank rod is on the passenger side of the truck. Painted the crank rod yellow so I can find it in the tool box. The safety cable was for peace of mind.

^^^^ That's a great idea. I might try to rig up something like that if I ever have to rassle with my spare again.

A few years when ago I finally replaced my original (!) spare with something newer, I think I taught myself a few new words.....

I had a photo of a red C10 long bed at the NW Goodguys several years back but I must have deleted it.
Same set up as above on a long bed pickup with the inverted wheel tub into the right rear floor bed.
It was well done and functional.
