Looking at buying a 2001 Silverado

So, i recently test drove an 01. All of the mechanics seemed good, but there was a little vibration at 65+. Could that just be the tires? It also is just starting to bubble over the rear fenders. Any good ideas to stop that and make it look nice? I am already planning on putting fender flares on. Ok, one last thing it has a few rock chips along the side, are there any simple inexpensive fixes to keep them from starting to rust? Clear coat the whole thing again? How much would that cost?

The vibration could be the tires, rims, or wheel bearings.

I have an 01 silverado, I don't have any shaking at speed. I esp don't have any rust, cars here with rust are from the 70s and earlier

To check and see if its a wheel bearing jack up the front of the truck and grab the tire by the top and bottom (or grab both sides of the tire) sorry I can't remember haha, and rock the tire back and forth if it rocks you have a wheel bearing going out easy fix. You could also get the tires rotated.

For the chips you could try touch up paint if the chips aren't too big.

A guy I work with just had a wheel bearing go out got a new MOOG one from rockauto and it took him like 45 min (he is also mechanically challenged haha)so it is way cheaper that way. Good luck

I was just shown another tip on checking the wheel bearing, hold the coil spring while spinning the hub. you can feel the grinding of the bearings through the spring.

At $9000 for a '01, It would have to perfect! If you feel it is worth $7500, Don't pay a penny more.

Re: Looking at buying a 2001 Silverado

I'm thinking 9K is a bit on the high side. Is it 4WD? I bought mine last year: 2003 Ext. cab, 2WD, 143K miles. $5000. Mine is the 4.8L so take a little off for that but $7000 would be a fair deal. if the condition is good. The deals are out there, you have to look all the time and be ready to jump when the right one comes along.

Hey that is pretty cool good to know.

9K for an 01?? never I with what you said about it I wouldn't pay over 6K for it. Mine is a '05 and it blue books for right around 9K. That guy is asking way too much.

Re: Looking at buying a 2001 Silverado

What was the truck? A V6 regular cab 2wd or an LTZ crew cab 4x4 2500? Mileage? Makes a big difference in price.

I'm assuming you were likely looking at a Z71 ext cab with the 5.3L?

If you see bubbles on the fenders the rockers and door bottoms will be right behind it.

Vibration could have been a bad U joint. Mine went at 130K.

Re: Looking at buying a 2001 Silverado

way too much money...vibrations can be a number of things...bearings, u-joints, hell even a carrier bearing but not normally. for a 5.3L LS i'd say no more than 5k private party
