New guy here. From PA. Some help??

Hello folks,

I just got a 71 gmc custom 2500 4x4. PS/PB/ 4 spd .

Not sure of the gears but real low. + the granny gear.

It's a little rougher then my usual junk, but I'm pretty pleased(after the panic sweating). Hey and the wife didn't hit me over the head with it. That's good.

Some Of the issues I need to get straightened out ASAP. I would appreciate any help.

1. No power brakes?? Are the boosters interchangable. What years? Pretty sure it's shot. I still need to check the line. Any pointers?

2. No exterior lights brake/headlights???? I'll check switch first then what?

2a. The little fuses at the front near the power standoffs(fusable links??) does anyone know what size they are??

3. Exhaust: It has the ramhorn manifolds. I'm looking for an exhaust from the manny's back. Any suggestions? Cheap. JC Whitney ? Or should I just cobble something together?

4. No emergency brake. it's been gutted right to the wheels. I have the pedal. It's an eight lug w/full floater rear. Any Ideas on getting parts for this? interchanges ect. Hopefully a fellow member can help out here.

5 Lastly the PO used tin foil and insulation to cover the fuel line as it comes out of the in cab tank to the lines. Need a better solution.

I realize that's quite a list. Thanks for any help.

Welcome to the best site on the web!

I would suggest LMC for the exhaust. They have a decent kit, works good, and the system lasts for a long time.

Welcome from southeastpa,.1 Let the truck run to build vacume in Your booster.Turn off and let it sit for about 5min.Pull the plastic connecter out of the booster.See if it has any vacume.2 sounds like the switch to have no lights at all.Cheap to buy at the parts houses.2a I think they are 4amp.Not sure why it is covered in tin foil.

Welcome from Central Mississippi. I don't have an e-brake cable either...I have the steel 'foot' that was used on those old bumper jacks...I use it as a wheel chock.

Smokekiki, If there's no vac then what? Replace, rebuild? Did I read that the 3/4 have a different booster.
thanks

Welcome to the board from South Mississippi. I put a booster off a 3/4 on my half ton, so you should be able to use a 1/2 ton booster on a 3/4 ton?

boosters are under a hundred bucks at the local parts emporium.

I just paid 78 bucks for one last week myself.

3/4 ton vacuum booster is different from 1/2 ton as the 3/4 ton has two diaphrams in them. 1/2 ton will fit but will not have the assist that the 3/4 ton booster has.

Hey, you aren't that far away from me

Where did you find this GMC? Man, can't find a decent '67-72 4x4 in these parts anywhere

I guess its like someone told me, "You already have a four by four, but all four wheels are in the rear " (Meaning my '69 GMC 3500 t-tag)

Thanks again folks,

TP, I think I just got lucky. Maybe not??? I really wanted to spend more on a good one. This one's a little rough. But I figure at least I can get my 7 bills back for the axles and engine and tranny.

Hey on a side note there was no brake fluid in the front ressy?? I think this still goes back to the rear brakes and them being gutted. I really need to get back there and check things out.

thanks

Thought I'd give a little up date, only working on this part time so:

1. fixed the blown fuses 4amp (thanks)
2. new light switch -- got lights now
3. new exhaust from whitney I reversed the tail pipes and cut them short to exit in front of the rear wheels looks much better. It's a flat bed so I thought the pipes angled out the back looked goofy. Maybe straight out would have loode better.

4. nothing wrong with brake booster but my brake line was ruptured at the rear axle fixed that need to bleed the brakes

things I need to do for inspection:

1. find some E brake stuff(I posted on the parts board). Anyone know if the parts interchange from a dana 44 to a 60?? pigtail and guts.

2. I need to reroute the fuel line coming from the in the cab tank. way to close to the exhaust?? Any pics available of how the line is run?? At the moement I have a steel nipple down from the tank to a rubber line then to more steel line. I know something is wrong there. I plan to put in a blazer tank ASAP I just need it running now.

Thanks all for the help.
