Re: 63' three on the tree
Shift slooooowly. Also, you might change the gear oil in the trans with some
additive like Pro long added to it. Make sure your clutch is fully disengaging and your shift linkage is tight and adjusted properly.

Re: 63' three on the tree
Making sure your shift linkage is aligned properly would be the first step. Mine is a bit newer and has eyelet bushings that like to wear out and cause crappy shifting. You might check that also but I'm not 100% sure you have them.
Your transmission probably isnt sycronized either, years of grinding gears will break teeth or round the edges badly. Unless you want to keep this 100% stock I'd suggest you look for a latter model transmission thats is syncrod. It's soo much nicer to up and downshift without graaahhw.

Re: 63' three on the tree
"How to stop gear grinding on '63 3 spd"..........Easy, get a new Operator
![]() Yup, you got a non-syncro 3 spd in that truck and your trying to drive it like your packing a full box of syncro's. We had one in a farm truck and got along fine. Double clutch and move your shift lever slowly. I didn't mind ours one bit, but I grew up with big trucks that didn't have syncro's so I was quicker to adapt to it.

Re: 63' three on the tree
That trans is only synchronized in 2nd & 3rd gears. If it's grinding into those gears, see how far off the floor the clutch pedal has to come before it starts engaging. If it starts real close to the floor, you need to adjust the clutch so it's more disengaged when the pedal's down. If it's not competely disengaged when you shift, not only will it grind, but the synchronizer will wear out a lot faster.

Re: 63' three on the tree
While on the subject how much do the syncs cost are they pricey.may have to replace second and third sync in my burb and yes it's a 4x4 fun, fun, fun, didn't have any problems until i had to pull the transfercase to replace the adapter that bolts from the tranny to the case mine was cracked, don't know what i did but ever since that it grinds from second to third now it's starting from down shifting third to second.try to fix one thing then something else happens,oh well guess this time I'll pull the motor and tranny.need to clean and paint anyway.
