Zinc Coating on new fender
I bought a new fender for my 68 and it has a zinc coating. I was thinking about taking it to a body shop and have it sprayed with something to seal it. So I call around to 2 shops and tell them what I have and I get 2 different answers.
1st answer: Its zinc coated? No need to do anything with that. Just put it on there it wont rust. 2nd answer: Its zinc coated. Well you can brink it down and we can spray it with a primer/sealer (cant remember exactly word for word) and clear coat it. So heres the question. Do I need to go with the 2nd answer or the 1st? Thanks

Re: Zinc Coating on new fender
Paint it...have you ever seen a rusty galvanized fence metal roof, or bolt head. I have.
The zinc coating breaks down over time, and the paint will protect the coating.

I thought galvanized and zinc plating are two different things.

Re: Zinc Coating on new fender
the color fades, especially under the sun. I know because mine has done that. It will rust too. Get it sprayed.

Re: Zinc Coating on new fender
Thanks for the info. Its headed to the body shop for a coat of sealant. Any thoughts on what would be good to paint it with? The truck will not be painted until next year. A primer with clear maybe?

Re: Zinc Coating on new fender
They are!
Electroplating, or plating, uses electricity. Anode and cathode. Like brake boosters, nuts and bolts, some oil pans, etc. The yellow, blue, etc., chromates add the color and some corrosion resistance. Galvanizing is molten zinc in which the part is run thru and let cool. It's used w/ corrosion in mind. |
